Welcome

This is a bare-bones website, but I hope it will be useful. I'll try to put up assignments, due dates, etc., and we will have some online conversations. If you make comments, please sign them, and please keep them mature and appropriate.

Monday/Tuesday: Draft of 4 pages (typed) of discussion of specifics (10 points)

Friday, 3/30: Revision of introduction due (20 points)

The revised intro will be graded on: in on time (5 points); interesting ideas, pushed beyond the obvious but with a clear direction ahead (10 points); engaging and articulate writing (5 points)

Thursday, 3/29: Draft 2 pages (typed) of discussion of specifics (10 points)

Wednesday, 3/28: Draft of Introduction due (5 points)

Monday/Tuesday, 3/24: 1) Have a discussion with someone older than you about your ideas for the paper (writing center is a possibility--or an adult, or...) and take notes on the discussion. 2) For each book, write down 3 specific lines, with their page #s, that you could discuss in your paper.

Friday, 3/23: paragraph about what you might write your paper about--comparing Gatsby and either My Antonia or Their Eyes

Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012: Read chapters 3 and 4 of "The Beast in the Jungle" and write one sentence in response to my posted question to the left.

Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012: Read chapter 2 of "The Beast in the Jungle" (pp. 414-424 in our packet). What impression does this story create of the relationship between men and women? Write a sentence in response, quoting some specific words from pp. 414-424.

Monday, Jan. 30: Read pp. 1-4 of "The Beast in the Jungle"; copy out one sentence and note down 5 amazing things about the sentence; then write an imitation of the sentence.

Monday-Tuesday, 12/12-13: Finish "Bartleby, the Scrivener" and make a comment on this blog.

Friday, 12/9: Make a comment on this blog after you have read "Bartleby, The Scrivener" up to the following sentence, about halfway through the story:

"I have given up copying," he answered, and slid aside.

Thursday, 12/8: Draft a personal essay that responds to either “There was a Child Went Forth” or Dickinson’s “There’s a certain slant of light." Both poems attempt to convey an idea about the way external things play out internally. Spend 40 minutes tonight vividly describing some time or way something in your environment has had a big influence on you.

Wednesday, 12/7: REad your book for 25 minutes; bring book to class.

Monday, 12/5: A) Write a sentence connecting one or more formal elements of Dickinson's poem J. 241 (or J. 288) to its meaning.
B) Read your book

Friday, 12/2: Write an imitation of a Dickinson poem.

Thursday, 12/1: Spend another half hour writing the other assignment (the puzzle/solution or the poem imitation)

Wednesday, 11/30: Spend a half an hour writing either (a) an explanation of your "puzzle" and "solution" or (b) an imitation of one of the shorter Whitman poems you got in class this week.

Wednesday, 11/23: 1) Write down interesting sentences about four specific words or phrases in your "Song of Myself" passage, and be ready to write an essay about it; 2) READ!

Monday/Tuesday, 11.21/22: 1) Read the Whitman excerpts and choose a 10-40 line passage. 2) Read your book for at least 20 minutes.

Friday, 11/18: Read your book!

Thursday, 11/17: Memorize eight or more lines of a Longfellow poem and be ready to recite it dramatically; also, read your book and bring it to class.

Wednesday, 11/16: Look up some Longfellow poems and read them; print out one that you like and bring it in to class; also, read your book and bring to class.

Wednesday, 11/9: Finish The Scarlet Letter; be ready for a quiz.

Friday: 11/4: Be ready to write an in-class personal essay.

Due Monday/Tuesday, 10/3-4: Read your book!

Due Friday, 9/30: Read your books, if your religion permits. You should have read 160 pages by Friday.

Due Wednesday, 9/28: Keep reading! Also, pick a brief, interesting passage from your book and make 2 copies of the passage, suitable for marking up and discussing.

Due Monday, 9/26/Tues. 9/27: 1) Be ready for Author/date/title quiz; 2) Write a page-long imitation of "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God"; 3) keep reading your book!

Due Friday, 9/23: 1) Read and comment on Edwards's "Personal narrative"; 2) Have read at least 80 pages of your book

Due Thursday, 9/22: 1) Read and comment on Edwards's Resolutions (blog post); 2) write 10 resolutions of your own; 3) Read your book!

Due Wednesday, Sept 21: 1) Write a paragraph on Rowlandson; 2) Read your book. You should be at least 80 pages into it by Friday. ALSO: Name Quiz!

Due Monday, Sept. 19 or Tuesday, Sept. 20 (depending on which block you are in): A focused, coherent 1-page essay
about how the particulars in a brief section of one of the poems fits into the poem overall. See my example at the end of the Colonial-era poetry packet.

Due Friday, Sept. 16: (1) An outline of the essay for Monday. ALSO: (2) bring to class a physical copy of a pre-1865 American book that you will read on your own.

For Thursday, Sept. 15: Be working on finding a book to read on your own--and be reading it!

Due Wednesday, Sept. 14: A one-page-long response to the study questions on ONE of the poets in the "Colonial-Era Poetry" Packet.
