Monday/Tuesday, 3/24: 1) Have a discussion with someone older than you about your ideas for the paper (writing center is a possibility--or an adult, or...) and take notes on the discussion. 2) For each book, write down 3 specific lines, with their page #s, that you could discuss in your paper.

Thursday, 12/8: Draft a personal essay that responds to either “There was a Child Went Forth” or Dickinson’s “There’s a certain slant of light." Both poems attempt to convey an idea about the way external things play out internally. Spend 40 minutes tonight vividly describing some time or way something in your environment has had a big influence on you.

Wednesday, 12/7: REad your book for 25 minutes; bring book to class.

Monday, 12/5: A) Write a sentence connecting one or more formal elements of Dickinson's poem J. 241 (or J. 288) to its meaning.
B) Read your book

Friday, 12/2: Write an imitation of a Dickinson poem.

Thursday, 12/1: Spend another half hour writing the other assignment (the puzzle/solution or the poem imitation)

Wednesday, 11/30: Spend a half an hour writing either (a) an explanation of your "puzzle" and "solution" or (b) an imitation of one of the shorter Whitman poems you got in class this week.

Wednesday, 11/23: 1) Write down interesting sentences about four specific words or phrases in your "Song of Myself" passage, and be ready to write an essay about it; 2) READ!

Due Monday, Sept. 19 or Tuesday, Sept. 20 (depending on which block you are in): A focused, coherent 1-page essay
about how the particulars in a brief section of one of the poems fits into the poem overall. See my example at the end of the Colonial-era poetry packet.

Due Friday, Sept. 16: (1) An outline of the essay for Monday. ALSO: (2) bring to class a physical copy of a pre-1865 American book that you will read on your own.
